De ce sa studiezi in China?

17/12/2018

Reasons to study in China

I am one of the many foreign students of Shanghai International Studies University, and I am currently doing my Masters degree in English-Chinese Interpretation. Even though, for a non-native speaker like me, it can be challenging at times, SISU’s Interpretation Master is a very professional interpreting program, which has helped me in various aspects, and it will certainly continue to do so.

The first and the most important advantage of studying in China is, of course, the language environment. For a Romanian native speaker who is studying Chinese, being in touch with Chinese language is a crucial element. Also, having native Chinese teachers is equally important. Since the beginning of the Interpretation Master, my Chinese level has been constantly increasing, thus giving me the chance to have a more thorough understanding of the language in use. The classes are always very engaging, and even if sometimes I find it hard to keep the pace with the native students, this is a very effective way of developing my language skills. Moreover, besides learning more and better Chinese, I can also improve my English here. As a non-native of neither of the two languages, there is always room for improving.

Secondly, in my opinion, this Master is a very useful training program for future interpreters. During the class, students become familiar with a wide range of translation topics, which further helps them to take a better and more authentic approach on translating. Once we gain basic knowledge from a wide variety of fields, it becomes easier to understand the meaning, and the message is transferred into the B language with more confidence. Personally, I find the curriculum extremely useful, because it always incorporates very up to date material, meant to increase our understanding of the latest trends and facts from around the world, and thus render an authentic translation.

Thirdly, another perk of studying in China, is that the more you live here, the better you understand Chinese people. What I mostly like about this Interpreting Master is that through the knowledge that we grasp while translating, we actually deepen our understanding of what is currently happening in China and not only. Reading newspapers, listening to the local radio broadcast and debating ongoing problems, are some of the many indispensable tools that help students increase their awareness of the surrounding world.

All in all, from my personal experience as a foreign student in China, I can only say that it is a wonderful path to follow, sometimes challenging but always worth trying. I am confident that the Interpretation Master will help me achieve a better grasp of Chinese language and a better understanding of the Chinese world.
